  • Formation of Korea’s First University-Led Consortium for Autonomous Mobility Solutions
    • Led by a university, the Deep Mobility Consortium was launched to develop next-gen autonomous mobility (Level 5) solutions, involving Hyundai Motor and four other mobility companies.
    • Research includes autonomous learning-based mobility OS (mOS) and real-time problem-solving algorithms.
    • Core technologies of mOS are based on the lab’s Intelligent Edge Framework, selected as one of KAIST’s 14 Leading Future Technologies in 2024.
    • A multidisciplinary research model involving 7 professors from Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mobility Studies.
  • Top-Tier Research and International Leadership in Distributed Computing
    • Developed Korea’s first network framework (ATLAS) for large-scale distributed virtual environments like MMORPGs, internationally recognized.
    • Published 61+ papers in top journals (Presence, Computer Networks) and conferences (INFOCOM, ICC, LCN, VRST, VR); cited over 692 times.
    • Landmark ACM paper on edge computing (“Virtual cloud computing provider for mobile devices”) cited over 660 times; recognized as a pioneering group in the field.
    • Selected as a National Research Lab (NRL) in 2001, received Internet Technology Award (2007) and Ministry Award (2014), and became a Software Star Lab (2019).
  • Ubiquitous Computing Middleware for Location-Based Smart Services
    • First in Korea to implement middleware for smart cities and IoT-based smart environments.
    • Published a foundational 2010 paper that sparked global interest in mobile cloud and fog computing.
